First Student | COMPANY OVERVIEW

Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, First Student is the largest provider of school bus transportation in the country transporting 4 million children daily on a fleet of over 70,000 yellow busses.  Our mission statement expresses the serious nature of our business, and the precious nature of our cargo:

First Student is committed to transforming student travel to ensure the safest, most reliable journey for our children through continuous training of all employees and the development of innovative technology.

First Student has the fifth largest non-car fleet in North America, housed in over 750 locations in 40 states with total revenues in excess of $2.6bln.

First Student is the largest operating division of First Group America, which is comprised of four business lines.  First Transit provides transit contracting & management services, First Services provides vehicle maintenance & ancillary services, and Greyhound Bus which is the largest provider of intra-state bus transportation in the country.

In turn, we are part of First Group, PLC—the largest passenger transport group in the world.  Headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland and traded on the London Stock Exchange (FGP.L), the First Group family of companies transports over 2.5 billion passengers annually, operates one out of every five busses in the U.K, and operates 4,500 regional, intercity, and commuter lines train services every day.

We have had a dynamic past, are enjoying an exciting present, and are looking forward to a future that holds a tremendous amount of opportunity.  Even with the growth we have enjoyed—growing from a 9,500 unit fleet in 1999 to over 70,000 today, there remains incredible opportunity for further expansion; school bus transportation has been a fragmented $13bln industry and we are positioned as the leaders in consolidating that historic model.

EMPLOYEES

Each one of our 70,000 employees must live the mantra, If you cannot do it safely—don’t do it.  Every person ultimately has a bearing on whether or not children are being transported safely, so individuals that tend to succeed with our organization take this mantle of trust very seriously.  Also, due to the rapid growth of our organization as well as our anticipated future growth, it’s critical that individuals considering our organization find change exciting.  We are constantly evolving at First Student, and we need professionals that enjoy riding a very steep growth curve and are able to navigate the challenges that naturally follow.

From a cultural perspective, even the highest level executives at First Student tend to be as comfortable on the bus lot, as the board room.  They are as comfortable interfacing with the person driving the bus, as the person driving strategic vision.  We are an extremely hard working, low ego organization with a high degree of respect for each individual contributor regardless of title.

OPPORTUNITY

First Student is currently talking to select individuals concerning an opportunity to become the Regional Manager of Human Resources for the Northern New England area.  This position will have responsibility for all HR activities in 44 locations in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.  This position reports to a Regional VP, and has dotted line to the East HR Director.
