Topic:
A Proactive Approach in Controlling the Cost in Managing an On the Job Injury

Bureau of Labor Statistics state the following:

  • If an employee is out of work for six months he/she has a 50% chance of returning to work.

  • If an employee is out of work for one year he/she has a 25 % chance of returning to work.

  • If an employee remains out of work for two years he/she virtually has no chance of returning to work.

An employer who implements a proactive comprehensive risk management approach, including proper accident investigation and reporting, establishing an occupational health provider relationship, implementing early intervention aggressive case management services and provides a modified light duty program will control their medical and indemnity cost. In addition, they will also increase productivity, reduce cost to train/and or hire replacement workers and increase the overall morale of the workforce.

Objectives:

  • Address the importance of proper procedures for accident reporting and investigation of injury.

  • Describe the benefits of the risk management team approach in managing the on the job injury with injured worker, employer, treating physician and case management.

  • Describe the benefits of an occupational health provider in the assessment, evaluation, treatment and return to work planning.

  • Understand the role of the case manager as an advocate for the injured worker and a value added benefit to the employer in managing the workers’ compensation claim.

  • Describe the development of a light duty program and the benefits to the injured worker, and the employer in maintaining productivity and in controlling costs.
